Malaxmi Foundation promotes ethnic and regional art by lending a helping hand for survival of Kondapally Toys
This art piece is a traditional handicraft from KONDAPALLI, a little village near Vijayawada in Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh. The craftsmen who make these famed art pieces are predominately from ARYAKSHATRIYA Caste. They are made at home and the work involves the entire family. This traditional art form has been handed down from one generation to another. It continues to be the main livelihood of the people of Kondapalli.
These toys are made of locally available white Sander Wood, which is subjected to a process of slow heating to draw out all the moisture.
Only natural dyes and colours are used which are prepared from extracts of locally available plants like Karakkai, Moduga, etc. The process of making colours sometimes takes more than 24 hours. The brushes used to colour the toys are very fine and sharp, made of goat’s hair. The gum used for gluing is from Neem and putty paste is from Tamarind seeds.

Kondapalli Toys bring colour and joy. They create awareness about rural life and folklore through play. They are a perfect way to learn about the richness of Indian culture and mythology. These beautiful and unique folk toys made by hand so painstakingly are a great reminder of our rich heritage. Malaxmi Foundation promotes this ethnic & regional art by lending a helping hand for survival of Kondapally Toys.
